The Heart Behind Lucas Journey

My name is Michelle Wittu, and I am the founder of Lucas Journey, a public nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free educational advocacy for families of children with special needs. I am also the proud mother of my 7-year-old son, Lucas, who has Down syndrome and attends public school.

When Lucas first entered the school system, I quickly realized how overwhelming and difficult it can be for parents to advocate for their child’s educational needs. Many families simply do not have the knowledge, resources, or financial ability to secure the support their children deserve. I saw firsthand that what the school was offering Lucas was not enough to help him thrive academically or in life.

Everything changed when I hired an educational advocate. With guidance, I learned our rights, how to hold the school accountable, and how to ensure Lucas received the services he needed. The difference was life-changing. Lucas began to thrive, and the relationship between myself, his teachers, and the school administration transformed into one of understanding and collaboration.

But I also realized something important: Most parents do not have access to this kind of support. Too many special needs children are overlooked, misunderstood, or denied the opportunities they need to reach their full potential.

That is why I created Lucas Journey — to make advocacy accessible to every family, regardless of income.

Why Educational Advocacy Matters

Navigating the complexities of special education laws and school policies is a challenge no parent should face alone. Advocacy ensures that Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are not just paperwork, but meaningful roadmaps for progress. By bridging the gap between home and school, we help create environments where children can truly flourish.
